Parents Activities
For those of you new to UM water polo, you thought the days of helping with the sports activities ended when your son graduated from high school and went on to college. We are happy to let you know, however, that you can continue to be a supporter (and perhaps vicarious participant) at the university level! Seriously, the UM men's water polo team gets very limited university support and some of the parents have been working the past few years to supplement that support, and to help the team as it strives toward its goals. For most of the tournaments we usually provide some snacks and water, and sometimes even provide dinner, towing services or whatever the guys think will help. For the 2006 season the first big event will be the MSU Tournament. We started hosting a tailgate luncheon for the team on Saturday. It's a lot of fun, since MSU usually has a home football game and those UM banners in the parking area get many comments, strange looks and periodic vulgarity. MSU has an outdoor pool which is unique in our part of the country. We plan to do the same this year. We will set up fairly early Saturday morning and all team members and family members are invited to join us (we'll even include a few team alumni). If you are interested in helping out just let us know. We'll use the forum and e-mail to finalize plans. The second major event will be the home tournament. We try to work with the team to use this as a fund raising opportunity by selling programs, T-shirts and food/drinks. More on that after the MSU event. Lastly, we usually have several parents at each of the tournaments and we have come to enjoy the camaraderie and usually get together for meals, drinks, etc. It's a great chance to provide our water polo expertise on strategy, officiating, etc. Again, we can use teh forum to coordinate hotel plans, etc. We think it's a great group of young men and enjoy supporting them. To the returning parents - we are looking forward to seeing you again. To the new parents - welcome! Go Blue! Greg Kurdys '78

Can't Wait!!
 Hi Greg, Nice note ... Kim and I will contact you soon with what we can bring to the MSU tourney. We'll plan to be there early also. From what Dan told me this weekend, it looks to be a great weekend of polo. Loads of competition .... I hope the guys will be ready. Kim and I had the wonderful oppertunity to host a few of the guys today at the lake. After a night in the wilds of Pullman and a day at the beach from what I saw some were ready to continue and others basically spent. All in all, I think the guys were ready to rumble and kick some tail. Once again this year they are a great bunch to have around. Note to the parents out there ... this group of fne young men really know how to put down the food. As Greg mentioned, when we support them at the tournements home or away they are always ready to eat and drink. The more help the better for the guys. Don't hesitate to sign up to support the team in any way you can. Can't wait to get to the pool ... Ive missed the fun !!! Go Blue .... Phil

Hotel Info for Out of Town Tournaments
All, I have checked into some hotels for away tournaments based on the published schedule. FYI -- there are NO hotels available in Oxford, Ohio, for the Miami of Ohio tournament. I found a Fairfield Inn in Middletown, Ohio, which was the closest I could find (about 20 miles) without going all the way to Cincinnati. It's $100/night. Prices in the Cincinnati area which is closest to Oxford are a little higher. Also, there are VERY FEW hotels available for the Indiana tournament and those that are require a 2-night stay due to "event pricing". Indiana must have a home football game that weekend. Pricing is high -- $219/night at Fairfield Inn. I found rooms still available at the Econo Lodge in Bloomington for $140/night. JT said he thinks they have team rooms through the Indiana block. I'd be happy to call various hotels to see if we can get a group rate for away tournaments. If interested, let me know. Last year, the MSU tournament was well attended by the team and their supporters! It was great having tents to escape from the sun between games and Kurdys' grill for mass feedings. Phil and I will bring a canopy and will volunteer for salads, or chips, or drinks or whatever they boys will need to keep them going during the intense, but FUN, weekend. Let's all coordinate! Also, we will be out of town for the U of M home tournament and can't help during the tournament. We can donate drinks, etc, before we leave town. Can't wait to see everyone! GO BLUE!! Kim Roehm

THE SPARTAN INVITE TAILGATE PLAN
Hi all UM Polo Players and their Families!! I am Melanie Kurdys, Dan's mom. We are very excited to start Water Polo Season again this year. We love the game and are very happy all our guys are involved and having fun! As in the past couple years, Greg & I and Kim & Phil Roehm would like to coordinate a tailgate for the players and their families at the MSU Spartan Invitational this weekend. The tournament schedule is attached. Here's the plan.... We plan to arrive to park in Munn Field about 8 or 8:30. The MSU Home football game is scheduled to start at 3:30. We will have coffee available. Both Teams play at 10AM, then the A Team plays at 12 and the B Team at 2. We are thinking we will serve food at 11 for the B Team and 1 for the A Team, (unless the coaches have a different idea!!). EXACT TIMES TBD . We will set up our M canopy and have chairs and blankets. We will bring tables, a grill, etc. Greg & I will bring Brats, hot dogs, buns and fixin's. We are planning on 30 players and two coaches. All you parents are welcome to bring other stuff to help. We need: drinks, (including lots of water), fruit, salads, chips, desserts. Please RSVP if you are coming and what you would like to bring. I will begin coordinating the food for the home tournament the following weekend and plan to have a draft plan this weekend. Looking forward to seeing you all! Melanie
